Witches hunched over flame-licked cauldrons whispering scary sounds into a boiling mist - they are not the only characters who invoke the power of "magic words." Lawyers festoon contracts with "boilerplate" phrases in the hope that the magic of shop-worn phrases will ward off evil spirits (lawsuits, or even worse, spooky malpractice claims).
