Johnny A. Kumar is a partner in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office who focuses his practice in patent counseling, litigation, and transactions, with an emphasis on patent procurement and enforcement in the field of electronics and computer technologies.
Mr. Kumar advises clients in U.S. patent procurement and worldwide management of patent prosecution; patent reissue, reexamination, and interference proceedings; patent infringement, validity, and clearance opinions; patent and trade secret audits and due diligence studies; and patent and trade secret enforcement. He also develops strategies to realize value from patents in a particular technology or industry through patent portfolio development, patent mining, and patent portfolio licensing. Mr. Kumar frequently represents emerging growth technology companies in transactions involving patents and also counsels them on patent issues.
Mr. Kumar manages patents in a range of fields that includes semiconductors, nanotechnology, telecommunications, wireless communications, networks, the Internet, laser technology, computer hardware and software, fiber-optics, cryptography, speech recognition, medical electronics and devices, artificial intelligence, optics, light-emitting diodes, radar systems, mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, signal processing, video games, and information devices (PDAs, laptops, desktops, and cell phones). He also represents clients in the printing, automotive, and energy industries, as well as companies developing software for financial services, securities, and insurance purposes.
Prior to his legal practice, Mr. Kumar was an engineer for more than eight years, serving with IBM and General Electric.

Mr. Kumar is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Licensing Executives Society, the American Bar Association, and the IEEE.
Education
Mr. Kumar received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, with highest honors, in 1983 from the University of Texas. He received a J.D., with honors, in 1993 from George Mason University School of Law.
Mr. Kumar is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
