Robert Denvir is a partner in the firm’s tax department and a member of Winston & Strawn’s Executive Committee. His practice focuses exclusively on tax controversy matters, including representation of clients in federal and state audits, appeals, administrative hearings, and litigation.
Mr. Denvir is currently representing our clients in substantial federal income tax controversies in U.S. Tax Court, U.S. Court of Federal Claims, U.S. District Court, and Internal Revenue Service Appeals Offices around the country. These matters involve a range of issues, including substance over form issues, exclusion of income under Section 118, U.S. Tax Treaty benefits, Section 263A capitalization, method of accounting challenges, allocation of purchase price, Subpart F income, deductibility of acquisition costs, and debt-equity classifications.
Mr. Denvir represents many large foreign and domestic corporate clients, including several media concerns and telecom companies. His representative clients include Abbott Laboratories; SBC Communications, Inc.; Allied Waste Industries, Inc.; The Northern Trust; Chicago Tribune; Nicor Inc.; Jordan Industries, Inc.; and Weston Foods, Inc.
Activities
Mr. Denvir is chair of Winston & Strawn’s tax department and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Goodman Theatre.
Education
A 1967 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Mr. Denvir received a J.D. from DePaul University in 1971. He also is a Certified Public Accountant.
