Summary:

Over a 20-year period, it was found that M/G Transport Company, a subsidiary of the Midland Co., systematically engaged in the illegal discharge of oily waste and burned garbage into the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

Result:

On January 20, 2000, after a reversal of post-trial judgments by the 6th Circuit, M/G Transport was re-sentenced to pay $150,000 in fines. Port engineer J. Harshal Thomassee was sentenced to a $1,000 fine and one-year probation, while boat captain Robert S. Montgomery was sentenced to 4 months home confinement, 30 months probation, and a $2,000 fine.
