United States v. Athenian Sea Carriers
Statute(s): False Statements, Obstruction, APPS, Destruction of Evidence
Summary: In November 2006, the Coast Guard reported that M/T Captain X Kyriakou, was found in San Francisco with a so-called ‘magic pipe’ allegedly used to bypass pollution control equipment and allow the ship’s sludge and oily bilge water to be sent directly overboard. In December 2006 indictments were returned against the ship's engineers Artemios Maniatis and Dimitrios Georgakoudis and also later the company Athenian Sea Carriers.
Result:

On June 5, 2007, a jury acquitted the company and one of the engineers of all seven counts. In October 2007, engineer Dimitrios Georgakoudis was acquitted of any wrongdoing and released.
