Anne E. Thar

Anne Thar is Winston & Strawn’s conflicts partner responsible for monitoring and managing potential conflicts of interest.

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Thar served as vice president and general counsel of a major professional liability insurance company where she was in charge of the company’s loss prevention program and ethics inquiry hotline.

Ms. Thar received a B.A. in Political Science and German studies from Mount Holyoke College in 1979 and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law in 1983.  

Activities

In 2005, Ms. Thar was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Professional Responsibility. She formerly served as a  member of the editorial board of the ABA/BNA Lawyers’ Manual on Professional Conduct and as a member of the ISBA/CBA Joint Committee on Ethics 2000.

Publications

Ms. Thar is a frequent speaker on legal ethics issues. She presented “Tangled Loyalties” at the AON Large Law Firm Symposium in October 2004 and spoke at the American Bar Association’s 30th National Conference on Professional Responsibility in June 2004. She is the author of several articles published in the Illinois Bar Journal, including “Taking an Equity Interest in a Client — Is it Worth the Risk?” (Vol. 89, February 2001); “The Perils of Elma Fudd, Esq. — Malpractice Risks in Business Formations” (Vol. 88, December 2000); “Legal Malpractice, Ethics and Your Support Staff” (Vol. 88, October 2000); “Nice Guys Finish Last in Wills and Estate Planning” (Vol. 88, April 2000); and “Are You Representing the Wrong Clients?” (Vol. 87, December 1999).
