Christopher D. Murtaugh

Christopher Murtaugh has more than 35 years of experience as a commercial real estate attorney. His practice focuses on commercial property investment and disposition, real estate development, and lending activities.

Mr. Murtaugh has handled the acquisition, development, and disposition of properties in many states, and he has represented investors, lenders, and developers throughout the country. He is a member of the prestigious American College of Real Estate Lawyers.

Mr. Murtaugh has served as the lead attorney in a variety of major real estate development, loan, and investment transactions. He has represented investors in the acquisition, operation, and financing of major office buildings, including the Quaker Tower and 123 N. Wacker buildings in Chicago. He also represented a major national bank, on behalf of both U.S.-based and overseas investors, in the acquisition of, and loans on, income-producing commercial real estate in more than 50 separate transactions in all parts of the country. He has worked with developers of shopping centers in all aspects of acquisition, financing, and leasing to major anchor tenants, and he has represented investors and developers in the acquisition, development, operation, and disposition of distribution centers and industrial properties on a national scale. He also headed the representation for development of Philadelphia’s One Reading Center, a 650,000-square-foot office building; Baltimore’s Redwood Tower, that city’s first “air rights” building; and Princeton Forrestal Village, a major office, retail, and hotel mixed-use project in New Jersey. In addition, Mr. Murtaugh has represented lenders and borrowers in major loan restructuring and workout transactions for commercial real estate projects.

Mr. Murtaugh received an A.B. from the University of Illinois in 1967 and a J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1970, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif.  After law school, he spent four years in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

Mr. Murtaugh has been listed in the 2008 through 2014 editions of Chambers USA and selected by peer review for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America for 20 consecuive years. He has also been selected by peer review as a member of the Leading Lawyers Network serving on the Advisory Board and as an Illinois “Super Lawyer.”


Mr. Murtaugh is also a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and is a member of the Illinois and Florida bar associations. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Transfussion Medicine.
