Tom Fitzgerald is managing partner of Winston & Strawn and practices exclusively in the taxation area. He assists clients with tax issues related to acquisitions, divestitures, mergers, and reorganizations as well as tax controversy matters.
Mr. Fitzgerald has substantial experience advising both publicly and privately held corporations on tax issues regarding acquisitions, divestitures, mergers, and reorganizations involving more than $7 billion of purchase price and the restructuring of debt in excess of $4 billion.
Mr. Fitzgerald also has successfully represented numerous clients before the Internal Revenue Service on a variety of matters, including corporate reorganizations, intangible valuation, true lease, foreign tax credit, and accounting issues. He has successfully litigated cases in both the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals.
Mr. Fitzgerald received an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 and received a J.D. from Notre Dame Law School, with honors, in 1979. He is also a certified public accountant.
Mr. Fitzgerald is actively involved in the community and serves on the board of directors for the Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society and the Commercial Club Foundation. He is a former board member for Leaders Bank in Oak Brook, IL and the Notre Dame Law School Alumni Association. He is also a member of the Chicago Club.
