Tom Fitzgerald has been the managing partner of Winston & Strawn and a member of its executive committee since 2006. During his tenure, the firm has opened nine additional offices on three continents. Among his responsibilities, Mr. Fitzgerald coordinates the firm’s acquisition of new lateral talent, leads the firm’s client feedback initiative, and manages the firm’s more than 850 attorneys across the world.
Over the last five years, Mr. Fitzgerald has been involved in the firm’s major practice expansion efforts, including the acquisitions of:
- A group of 40 intellectual property and commercial litigation attorneys from the former Howrey law firm in Houston
- A 70-attorney litigation team primarily in New York from the former Dewey & LeBoeuf firm
- A significant ITC Section 337 group located in the Washington, D.C. and Taipei offices
- A high-profile group of commercial litigation, bankruptcy, energy, and corporate partners in Houston
Mr. Fitzgerald also works with the firm’s professional staff on law school recruiting, professional development matters, and alternative fee arrangements with clients.
Prior to serving as managing partner, Mr. Fitzgerald concentrated his practice on taxation matters for both publicly and privately held corporations, often advising them on acquisitions, divestitures, mergers, and reorganizations, and resolving disputes with federal and state tax agencies.
He received an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 and a J.D., with honors, from the Notre Dame Law School in 1979. He is a certified public accountant.
Mr. Fitzgerald is actively involved in the community and serves on the board of directors for the Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society and the Commercial Club Foundation.
