Paula Hinton Featured in Texas Lawyer’s “Winning Women”
September 1, 2014
Winston & Strawn Houston partner Paula Hinton was featured in Texas Lawyer’s “Winning Women” on September 1, 2014. Ms. Hinton was one of only 19 female litigators in Texas to receive this award.
The article highlighted Ms. Hinton’s ability to find issues in a case that other lawyers have overlooked and use those issues to win for her client. Re/Max of Texas benefited from this attention to detail when she resolved a breach of contract suit against a franchisee based on a previously unexamined issue. After being stymied in court for three years, Re-Max hired Ms. Hinton and in less than two months she suggested a solution which led to a successful motion to compel arbitration and ultimately a settlement.
In addition to representing businesses, Ms. Hinton also handles pro bono cases. In October 2013, she represented a former high school student who sued Kilgore Independent School District and two softball coaches, claiming that her privacy rights under the United States and Texas Constitutions were violated when her coaches questioned her in a locked locker room about her sexual orientation and then “outed” her against her will.
Ms. Hinton worked with the Texas Civil Rights Project and Jennifer Doan, a partner in Texarkana's Haltom & Doan, to secure a settlement of $77,500 paid to the victim. In addition, the settlement stipulated that the school district would hold a training session on sexual orientation and privacy policies and update its student/teacher handbook to include specific language about the district's anti-discrimination policy for sexual orientation.
Ms. Hinton is a litigation partner who focuses her practice on representing businesses in complex civil litigation. She has represented businesses in courtrooms across the country, before administrative agencies and in international and domestic arbitration forums to resolve a wide variety of disputes, including those concerning contracts and general business issues, business torts, consumer disputes, environmental issues, trademark issues, trade secret issues, product liability, telecommunications litigation, technical litigation, energy-related litigation, and numerous class actions.
