Linda Coberly Weighs in on ERA Ratification in Virginia at William & Mary Law School Symposium
November 9, 2018
On November 9, 2018, in support of ERA ratification in Virginia, Chicago Managing Partner Linda Coberly was a featured speaker at William & Mary Law School’s symposium titled “A Place in History: Should Virginia Ratify the Equal Rights Amendment?”
Winston & Strawn is actively involved in the effort to complete the process of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment. After Nevada ratified the amendment in 2017—becoming the 36th state to do so, after decades had passed since the 35th—the firm joined with activists working to make Illinois the next state to ratify. Winston lawyers worked together with activists on the ground to convene meetings and events, perform research, prepare materials, provide a webinar for activists and legislators, and give testimony, and Winston staff submitted “witness slips” and called their elected representatives. Just a few months ago, the Illinois General Assembly voted to ratify the Amendment, becoming the 37th state. One more state ratification is needed, along with action by Congress to remove the deadline that expired in 1982.
Winston is already actively involved in the ratification effort in North Carolina, and it has now joined the Virginia effort as well. The symposium at William & Mary Law School explored the continuing importance of the Equal Rights Amendment, its relationship with other laws and constitutional provisions, and the remaining obstacles to ratification and how they can be surmounted.
