David Greenspan Discusses Alex Rodriguez’s Lawsuit Against Major League Baseball
October 7, 2013
Winston & Strawn partner David Greenspan appeared on Bloomberg TV in “The A-Rod Lawsuit: Is It Just a PR Stunt?” on October 7, 2013.
Mr. Greenspan discussed Alex Rodriguez’s lawsuit against Major League Baseball for tortious interference with contract and business opportunities.
“In essence, he says that this is a witch hunt, orchestrated by Major League Baseball and the commissioner himself, to interfere with Rodriguez’s ability to make money, whether on the field through his contract with the Yankees or off the field through endorsements and the like,” Mr. Greenspan explained.
According to Rodriguez, the lawsuit is separate from the arbitration proceedings with Major League Baseball concerning Rodriguez’s appeal of an historic 211- game suspension. Mr. Greenspan noted that part of the legal strategy may be to take the fight from behind the closed doors of the arbitration boardroom and move it into the “neutral stadium” of a New York court. In addition, the suit has effectively expanded the public discussion about Rodriguez’s conduct to take into account Major League Baseball’s behavior as well.
“Now what we’re talking about is the witch hunt, and what are some really serious allegations of impropriety by MLB,” Mr. Greenspan said.
